What is a Colon Cancer Screening Colonoscopy?

A screening colonoscopy is performed to examine your rectum and colon, large intestine for signs of colon cancer. This procedure is performed with a colonoscope, a long flexible tube with a small camera located on its tip. This camera takes magnified images and displays them to your doctor.

As the doctors at Triborough GI guide the scope through your colon, they look for polyps and other abnormalities, such as inflammation. Your doctor can then use the scope to remove any polyps for testing. A lab examination then determines whether the removed cells are cancerous.

How does a Colon Cancer Screening Colonoscopy prevent cancer?

An early sign of colon cancer can be seen when abnormally growing cells form polyps. Over time, these polyps gradually become cancerous. A screening colonoscopy can identify and remove these polyps before they turn into cancer. A colonoscopy can also detect cancer at an early stage, while it is still treatable.

When should I get a Colon Cancer Screening Colonoscopy?

If you have an average risk for colon cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends getting your first screening colonoscopy at the age of 45. If however, you are at a higher-than-normal risk of developing colon cancer, you may need to get a screening colonoscopy earlier in life.

To determine your risk and get advice on when you should have a screening colonoscopy, you should schedule an examination with one of our doctors at Triborough GI. Your doctor will assess your medical history and physical health. Once your risk is determined, your doctor will give you a recommendation on when to have your colon cancer screening.

Your doctor may initially recommend a stool-based test in place of a colonoscopy. Stool tests can show whether you have hidden blood in your stool or if there is any cancer DNA. If your stool test is positive, you’ll need to follow up with a colonoscopy to obtain a biopsy and to determine if you have cancer.

What are the symptoms of Colon Cancer?

Like many cancers, colon cancer shows few signs in its early stages. However, as the tumor grows or spreads, symptoms will start to develop. Symptoms can include:

  • Abdominal cramps or pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • A change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, etc.)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Feeling your bowel doesn’t empty
  • Visible blood in your stool (red or dark)
  • Feeling full or bloated

While it is important to know and look for the signs of colon cancer, you should not wait for these symptoms to appear before getting a screening colonoscopy. Schedule an appointment, using our online booking or call the experienced team at Triborough GI.
